The School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech is offering continuing education seminars for the intern and practicing architects; Structural Technology for Intern and Practicing Architects. The continuing education seminars will be offered this May and September in Blacksburg and Alexandria, Virginia. Earn 26 LU/HSW hours. Every participant will receive a copy of the 2007 Architectural Precast Concrete DVD, a CD of the ARE sample tests and a course binder in addition to the certificate of completion.

MassImpact Symposiums March 28, and June 9, 2008 in Boston

The Boston Society of Architects and MIT's School of Architecture and Planning are initiating two open symposia starting in March 2008, gathering leading urbanists from the United States and overseas to frame the issues and opportunities facing the modern city in a period of global climate change and resource depletion. The goal is to establish a design and policy agenda for Boston and the New England region that benefits from best practices elsewhere and sets new standards for ensuring the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the city in a global economy. Want more education? The Internet's an option

MIT announced an online initiative in 2001 called Open-CourseWare (ocw.mit.edu),to "advance knowledge and educate students . . . to best serve the world."

Seven years and 1,800 courses later, anyone with an Internet connection can download syllabi, quizzes, and video lectures for courses ranging from aerospace engineering to world literature.

The idea of getting educated without paying tuition proved popular, prompting other universities to follow suit. There's now an OpenCourseWare Consortium (ocwconsortium.org) of schools from around the world, from Australia to Vietnam. The Cascadia Region Green Building Council is partnering with a continuing education training network called the National Sustainable Building Advisor Program (NaSBAP) to offer more resources and professional learning opportunities as part of the newly formed Cascadia Sustainability Academy. The current Sustainable Building Advisor (SBA) program is a 9-month certification course and exam available to working professionals interested in applying sustainable concepts to building, design, development, and construction. A Collaborate Effort Between a Firm and University

The design of healthcare environments has become increasingly important during the past few decades. The demand for high-quality healthcare environments has grown as well. Healthcare environments provide a unique set of design opportunities and constraints that distinguish them from other kinds of spaces. They are unusually complex and must serve the needs of many different users, including patients, visitors, medical staff, and administrative personnel. Perhaps that is why they are rarely assigned in academic architectural design studios - but they should be.

Students need to be exposed to the possibilities of healthcare design while in school, as it offers a window into a world of architectural practice where their work will always be in demand. In addition, research is needed to identify and analyze approaches to healthcare design issues, and especially to assist designers in creating places and spaces that meet the complex needs of users.

Cannon Design of St. Louis, MO, is consistently ranked among the top healthcare design firms in the world. Staff from Cannon Design will deliver a series of presentations to students about health care design to provide an overview of the field and to orient them to upcoming design projects. They will participate in the development of project assignments and in interim and final design reviews.

UCSB Research on Green Building

As part of a group thesis project, we are administering a survey regarding consumer and developer demand of a novel green building product. Right now, we are focusing on people in the building industry (architects, developers, contractors, etc.) in the United States. We are also conducting a separate survey for homeowners in the same region.

Your education as an architect typically begins in a school of architecture. But it does not end there. Training in architectural firms, continuing education and professional practice furthers the educational process. Schools and firms offer many opportunities for acquiring knowledge and skills; however, you must take responsibility for developing your competencies to the fullest.
